I'M CRUSHING!!!

No, I’m not lying under some huge boulder being crushed to smithereens...but I am CRUSHING on some new things I thought I’d share with you.  Life can sometimes grow dull and so it’s fun and maybe even “necessary” to make some new discoveries now and then.

#1 THE COTTAGE FAIRY
This is a youtube channel I discovered not long ago, and I absolutely adore it.  The young woman who is the creator is simply lovely.   “Paola Merrill is an artist, teacher and YouTube creator known as The Cottage Fairy. Merrill shares glimpses of her rural idyll in Northeastern Washington State  and chronicles the simple things: her bunny Mr. Darcy, drying wild flowers and catching the sun rising over the mountains.”  You can read more about her and her amazing move from the city to a very rural area  HERE   and, of course, you can search for her on youtube.  The scenery and music along with her captivating voice are so soothing and almost magical.

 #2  COVER GIRL FOUNDATION

Yes, Cover Girl!  I haven’t worn their foundation since high school but decided to try this one after watching yet another youtube video....you need to watch this one: RISA DOES MAKEUP

The creator of this channel is a veteran make-up artist who has taught me a good many beauty tricks (thank you, Risa, I need all the help I can get!)  She has used just about every makeup brand out there and yet she loves this foundation.  I decided to try it, and I am sooo glad I did.  I got mine at Wal-Mart for $10.49.

#3  THREDUP.COM

Now if you are squeamish or turned off by wearing second-hand clothes, you can skip this one.  My 14 yr. old granddaughter has turned me onto the idea of thrift shopping for clothes.  She and all her buddies say it’s the new way to shop.  You not only save money but you help the environment.  Thredup takes a little patience as there is SO VERY MUCH to look at, but you can narrow down your search.  I have also tried their Goody Boxes.  I’ve had a little luck with that, but it’s just plain fun.  Go to the site and read about it or try this youtube video.

#4 MINT MONGOOSE

This is a jewelry subscription.  I never knew there were so many BOX SUBSCRIPTIONS.  I subscribed to this one for 3 months and so far I have really loved the jewelry I’ve received.  You can watch this video to find out more. This youtube channel is called GEORGIA SUNSHINE and she unveils many different box subscriptions.  Wish I could afford all of them.  It’s just fun to receive a SURPRISE box now and then.  I also subscribed for a short time to SELFY-BOX which is makeup and skincare.  I really like it too, but it’s a little expensive and I used only about half the things I received.

 #5 FUDGE MINT COOKIES

Do you like the Girl Scout THIN MINT COOKIES?  If you do, then trot on over (well, maybe you should drive) to your nearest DOLLAR TREE and look for their Fundge Mint cookies.  Y’all, they taste the same!  And they are only $1 for 2 sleeves.  I put them in the freezer and nibble on a couple when I hear them calling.  (Your goodies do call to you, don’t they?)

#6  DR. PEPPER with CREAM SODA

I know...doesn't sound good but IT IS!  I'm a Dr. Pepper girl but the shot of cream soda just adds some pizzazz!

I love trying new things...and love it even more when I like them!  My “word of the year” is ADVENTURE and since I can’t seem to go on too many adventures quite yet, I guess making new discoveries will have to do.

What are you CRUSHING on these days that you think I’d like to try?

SING IT, JULIE!

When the dog bites,

When the bee stings,

When I'm feeling sad…

I simply remember my FAVORITE THINGS

And then I don't feel so bad.

(My Favorite Things by Julie Andrews)

I didn’t get bitten by a dog or even stung by a bee, but still 2020 was a year that made us all feel pretty bad.  It was difficult to put on a happy face and feel positive; but it’s 2021 and maybe…just maybe…it will turn out to be a decent year.  One thing I am going to “try”  my very best to do is to be more POSITIVE and think more good thoughts.  So for this post I thought I would write about some of my favorite things…things that bring a smile to my face, things I enjoy, things that make life just a little sweeter.

This is a new favorite thing.  I was out looking for things to put in my tiered tray for Valentines, and I came across this beautiful mug.  It’s a good reminder to me as I drink my morning coffee that no matter what’s going on around me, LIFE is a blessing from God and so LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL!  And would you believe this pretty little thang ("southern” for “thing”) cost only $1 at Dollar General!)

Speaking of my tiered tray…it’s become one of my favorite things.  Here it is all ready for Valentines Day.

Every year for part of my Christmas, my husband gifts me with this.  Y’all!!!!  It is absolutely delicious.  He orders from Amazon; I’ve never seen it in a store.  Give me a cup of this, my soft PJs, and a good book and I’m happy as a pig in mud!

I don’t mind spending a little more on skin care, but I’m not one to spend a ton of money on my makeup…and this mascara (though cheap...$4.99) is a favorite.  I saw it recommended on several blogs and youtube channels and decided to try it and so glad I did.  I have had more expensive (and good) mascaras, but this one works as well or better, and what a bargain.  Again, Amazon!

I just happened to pick up a box of these one day awhile back as I was grocery shopping.  So glad I did because they are absolutely yummy.  If you want a salty snack, I highly suggest these.

I love to read although I take it in spurts.  Before Christmas I read both of these and if you like to read I think you will enjoy them.  You can read about them along with reviews on Amazon (where else?)  They are both a little sad but turn out fine in the end.  They are both stories of how resilient the human spirit can be if we don’t give up.

I’ve developed a real relationship with YOUTUBE!  I don’t watch much TV (especially these days when there’s nothing but sad news and reruns).  My husband watches lots of hunting, fishing, and sports shows along with a few other shows I don’t care for…and he’s the King of the Remote!  I want to be with him in the evenings, so while he watches TV, I watch youtube videos and have developed quite a list of those I’ve subscribed to.  One of my favorites is THE COTTAGE FAIRY.  (Be sure to click on that for the link.)  Her soothing voice and the lovely music are just so lovely and calming.

Here is a description:

Paola Merrill is an artist, teacher and YouTube creator known as The Cottage Fairy. Merrill shares glimpses of her rural idyll in Northeastern Washington State  and chronicles the simple things: her bunny Mr. Darcy, drying wild flowers and catching the sun rising over the mountains.  In her words her channel is about “lessons on living with abundance while living simply.”

So “these are a few of my favorite things” …things that add a little joy to my life.  If you drop by to “chat”, please tell me one or two (or more) of your  favorite things.  And if you want to read about some more of my favorites, you can read this earlier blog post.

Here’s to 2021 and hoping this year you will get to enjoy many of your favorites…and maybe we’ll find new ones to add to our list.  Life is just too short not to find things to enjoy!

Now to try and get that song out of my head so I can go to sleep!!!

THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS...SING IT, JULIE!

One of my favorite blogs is NANA DIANA TAKES A BREAK.  Diana is such a sweetheart with a really witty personality; just the kind of person I would LOVE to have for my next-door neighbor (vs the people we never see!)  She recently had a post that I loved (yet another one) and I hope she won’t mind but I’m stealing borrowing her idea and sharing with you some of my VERY FAVORITE things. Please do read Diana’s post here.

Like Diana, there are certainly some of my favorite things that go without saying…my wonderful husband of 49 yrs., my son, DIL, and two GRAND grandchildren, my home, my career, church, etc. etc.  But this post is not about them, but rather about THINGS that really might not mean anything to anyone else but do mean an awful lot to me.

These boxes hold SO many memories.  There is one filled with childhood memories…report cards, dance recital programs, my autograph book (remember those?), and other reminders that I wasn’t always “this” age.  There is also one for my high school days…notes passed in class (and thankfully not confiscated by the teacher), photos, school play programs, a crushed prom corsage, and more of those things that high school girls just can’t seem to part with no matter how much dust they gather.  The next one is for my college days from back in the late 60s and early 70s…if you missed those days, you missed some really fun (and interesting) times😊  And the fourth box contains various mementoes from here and there that I just can’t part with.  I thought all these things deserved a pretty place to reside!

Side note:  a few years ago I bought a more “masculine-looking” box and filled it with various memories from my son’s childhood and teenage years.  I gave it to my son for Christmas that year, and I’m pretty sure he thought it was a wonderful gift.  At least he sure did smile a lot as he sifted through everything😊

Now this is something you may not have ever seen before.  Do you know what it is???  It took me awhile with lots of research to find out that it is a Luxardo wine bottle from the 1960s.  It was a gift to me many years ago from a very prim and proper (but sweet) 80+year old lady in the Sunday School class that I taught!  You are probably wondering, therefore, why she gave it to me…sans the wine…right?  The bottle had belonged to her (deceased) husband and she gave it to me because she knew that “bunnies” were special to me and she thought it was a rabbit!  Turns out though it’s a squirrel.  It was a quandary to me for quite awhile…long ears, long tail.  Rabbits have long ears but short tail; squirrels have short ears and long tail!!!  I think perhaps the person who designed the bottle may have partaken of a little bit too much of the wine!  Anywho!  I love the bottle…heavy as lead, but the pink color is just lovely…and it reminds me of this lady who was always quick to correct me when I pronounced a name from the Bible incorrectly, but she did it in a very kind-hearted way!

Another one of my favorite things is this precious tea set.  One day 2 or 3 months after we lost our daughter, I was having a REALLY bad day and just got in my car and took off…anywhere to get out of the house and the walls closing in on me.  I ended up at an antique store (that I didn’t even know existed) in a nearby town.  I saw this tea set there and just fell in love with it so it came home with me (and at a good price I might add).

This lovely hat was also in the same shop and goodness gracious I don’t know why but it came home with me too.  I think it’s probably from the 1920s or about.  I had no idea I would ever wear it but it came in handy several years when we had HAT DAY at the primary school where I taught.  A reporter came by one of those days and took my picture along with one of my sweet students and put us in the local paper.  I think the Lord knew I needed a pick-me-up that day and that I needed my 5-minutes of fame down the road!

My almost 91 year old mother still lives in her home which holds many memories that my siblings and I will have to sort through one day, but years ago she presented this to me.  Oh, how I love it!  It’s a dresser set from her youth…a perfume bottle and powder box…the kind you filled when they were empty.  There was another bottle but sadly it was broken somewhere along the way.  When I look at this set I am reminded of the day when ladies were so feminine and would never leave the house without having tended to their daily toilette.  This will be my granddaughter’s some day.

Sometimes I think I should have been born decades ago when there seemed to be more romance in life!  This gown belonged to my mother’s mother, my sweet Granny.  She made it herself “by hand”…even the buttonholes.  I don’t know when or where Granny wore this, but I like to dream that maybe she made it for her wedding night.  Yes, I am a terrible romantic.  We have lovely (sexy) lingerie these days, but this gown is absolutely beautiful to me.

Now you might be wondering why this old, tattered thing is one of my favorite things.  Well, it is a scrapbook that belonged to my Aunt Katie who died before I was ever born.  I wrote a post about my “eerie” connection to her; you can read it here.  The scrapbook pages are so yellowed and brittle now, but oh the memories she preserved…gum wrappers from a boyfriend, dance cards (yes, they really used those back when), school programs, etc.  I also have a book of her writings and guess what!  She was a romantic like me.  My post about her is one of my favorites.

And I couldn’t leave out my sweet teddy bears.  I collected them for years but decided I needed to bring a halt to that before they became an obsession.  When you are a primary school teacher and collect teddy bears (I was known as the “Teddy Bear Teacher), you get all sorts of “interesting” gifts at Christmas!!!  I finally did decide to part with some of my collection but these and a few others will be with me for awhile longer.

So that’s enough for now…although I do have other favorite things!  I am, however, trying to pair down our belongings now that we are over the hill beginning to age.  A few years ago we downsized my mother-in-law and I don’t think the lady had ever gotten rid of anything….literally!  It was a grueling experience for all of us, especially her, seeing many of her belongings and memories being thrown out or given away.  I honestly do not want my son to have to deal with that same situation.  I know he will have to someday, but I want to do what I can now and in the days to come so that he won’t have quite so much to deal with.  I mean, I don’t want the guy cussin’ his mama after she’s gone to heaven!!!

I’m sure we all have our favorite things…things that mean something special to us but perhaps won’t be so meaningful to our children when we are gone.  But hopefully my crew will keep at least some of these things to remind them  that I was a romantic who loved her family and loved the memories of her favorite things.  What are some of your favorite things?

And just in case you have Julie's tune in your head but can't remember the lyrics, here you go....

Beautiful Bouncing Baby Bunnies

Once again I am behind in writing my blog….and reading the posts of others out there in BlogLand.  I have really missed it, but too much going on lately and nothing much to write about.  With Easter around the corner, I thought I would share some really cute & sweet pictures of precious bunnies that I have collected on Pinterest.
Who ME?  You think I’m precious?  Awww…thanks!

I love bunnies…we even had a real one once upon a time, but that smart little fella figured out how to escape his cage over and over again.  Our daughter also loved rabbits & had a substantial collection (not the real kind).  We lost her in 1986 at the age of 9; and in her memory, over the years I have hidden small rabbit figures all over our large yard.  (They don’t look tacky because most are tucked away here and there, under this bush or behind that tree.)  Years ago we were faux-grandparents to a set of beautiful twins and they loved to toddle around the yard looking for all the bunnies.  Our own grandchildren came along and they did the same.  That has always warmed my heart.
God created…every living creature that moves…And God saw that it was good.

                                                                                                  --Genesis 1:21

So in honor of Mandy and in anticipation of Easter, I hope these make you smile😊

I can definitely see myself as the queen.

Does this hat make my tail look  big???

I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!

This diet is really getting to me…what I wouldn’t give for a carrot!

I get by with a little help from my friends😊

I  know we have our differences, but I really think we can make a go of it.

A flower in my ear and a little fluffing of my tail, and I’m ready for a night out.

Things would be pretty boring if everybody looked the same, don't you think?

Being cute & precious is such hard work…time for a nap!

Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.

THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS!

I just read a really old post on someone’s blog where the writer was talking about some of her favorite things.  So….since I yet again haven’t had anything worth writing about….I decided I’d go on a photo shoot among my belongings to see what some of my own favorites were.  (OK….so I’m bored and needed something to do today😊 …and besides, maybe it will be fun!)     (WARNING:  PICTURE HEAVY!!!)

HOUSEHOLD FAVORITES

We have quite a few antique family pieces in our home….things we’ve inherited from our parents or grandparents.  This antique ICE BOX  is definitely one of my favorites.  You would not have believed how this thing looked when we got it!  In fact, nobody else in the family even wanted it because it looked SOOO BAD.  But I have to give my husband credit…he saw a diamond in the rough!  We had it restored and we just love it.  The ice box actually belonged to an elderly farm hand that lived in a little shack on my husband’s grandparents’ farm.  She was like part of the family and always helped Grandmama with the cooking, cleaning, gardening, or whatever else needed to be done.  She was loved and affectionately called DUMP (don’t ask me why!!!)

This antique PENDULUM CLOCK was a gift to my husband and me from my stepfather shortly after we were married.  It was his passion to find old clocks and restore them.  I love to hear this one BONG the hour, but my husband doesn’t, so (sadly to me) it remains silent.  It is sitting atop an antique PIE SAFE that belonged to my husband’s grandparents.

One more antique to show is this beautiful HALL TREE that belonged to my husband’s other grandparents.  My husband would sit on the seat every year on Christmas Day as he grew up opening presents at their house, so she wanted him to have it.  For years it was ugly & black because we thought it was supposed to look like that (seriously????)  Then my husband decided to refinish it and what beauty was lying underneath!!!

These two LAMPS are not antiques but I like my “Tiffany wanna-be’s”!!!  The first one was a gift from my mother-in-law and the second we bought at auction.  I love how they look at night when they are turned on.

This little GREEN CHEST has really seen better days but it’s a favorite because it was my first (and only) attempt at painting with chalk paint!  I found it (all blue and ugly) in a thrift store.  It now holds many of my craft supplies.

And one last antique is my IRON BED.  Long story that I won’t go into about how I came to have it, but I do love it.  This is in what we now call my granddaughter’s room where she absolutely loves to spend the night!

THIS  &  THAT  FAVORITES

My PORCH is probably my favorite part of our home.  I have spent many hours sitting in my swing reading, watching the rain, or just pondering on things.  The CANDELIER hanging from the ceiling also has a funny story.  Found it in a consignment shop in FL on one of my girlfriend trips.  You should have seen me pack our vehicle (which was carrying 6 ladies and all our luggage) so that it would fit!!!

This is an ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING done by…..a second-grader!  Years ago it was a gift to me from one of my students.  His mother is an artist and evidently he inherited some of her talent.  It is displayed in my kitchen.

These sweet  TEDDY BEARS are just 2 of my collection.  I don’t really collect them anymore as they were beginning to take over and multiply!  But I do love them all.  These two were gifts from my sweet husband.

Years & years ago I was going through a very difficult period of grieving and would sometimes just take off for day trips on my own.  One such day I discovered this precious TEA SET in an antique store.  It just called my name and so I HAD to bring it home with me!

Can you guess what this is?????  Well, I couldn’t for many years.  However, through lots of research I finally found out it is a…….WINE BOTTLE…..and it is an antique as well.  It was given to me by a very sweet and special elderly lady (in her 80s) while I was her Sunday School teacher.  She actually thought it was a RABBIT and since she knew I loved rabbits she wanted to give it to me.  Turns out it’s really a SQUIRREL…but I never told her that😊  She told me it belonged to her late husband…..I later found out he was….well, let’s say he wasn’t a tee-totaler!

Although I’m omitting a lot of my favorites, I couldn’t leave out these….all the LOVE LETTERS from my husband while he was away at National Guard Training Camp for 4 months (way back in 1971); and the little stack is LOVE NOTES from high school….yes, I said HIGH SCHOOL.  How could I ever throw those away???

FAVORITE  CLOTHES  (shoes are a whole different post!!!)

I love, love, love CLOTHES and probably have more than I should.  And yet I often look in my closet and say, “I don’t have anything to wear!”  Is there a woman anywhere that has never said that????  I don’t really get to shop a lot since my little town is 70 miles from a decent shopping site.  And another thing….I’m NOT a CLOTHES SNOB.  If I like it, it doesn’t matter to me if it comes from Nordstrom or Wal-Mart!  I’m an equal opportunity shopper! My style now leans much more toward casual since I am retired and spend most days at home or doing something with the grandkids, but here are some of my favorites right now…….

Give me polka dots, tassels, & pompoms and I’m a happy dresser!  The NAVY POLKA DOT SWEATER is new from Old Navy.  The colorful TASSELED TOP I have enjoyed all summer and it came from Goody’s.

I love both of these SWEATERS from last year.  The first one is RUBY RD. from BELK & was a gift from my husband last Christmas.  The other also came from BELK last year….since it’s my college colors I wore it to a GEORGIA SOUTHERN alumni party😊

These 2 TOPS are new & I “think” I got them both from BEALL’S (or maybe it was TJMaxx).  Neither was very expensive but really look cute with jeans.

I love to wear these sleeveless INSULATED VESTS, and I have several.  They are often all I need when I run to the grocery store or do errands during the cooler months.  This was also a Christmas gift from my husband but you can find them in many places online.

Well, I told you this post would be PICTURE HEAVY and sorry it’s so long.  Maybe it at least helped my readers to get to know me a little better…and it will be something my granddaughter can look at in years to come (and probably laugh)!  I did another post on some of my favorites back in 2012 if anyone is interested....go here

So, what are some of your FAVORITE  THINGS…..besides raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens?????
